What Is Sandblasting Technique?

The sandblasting technique appeared in the twentieth century. As a traditional processing method, sandblasting has been widely used in the fabrication of headstone.

After inscribing letters on a tombstone, makers will sandblast the words with unique materials to ensure beauty and clarity.

As time passes, this technology has developed rapidly. Text effect created by this method is increasingly abundant. But the making steps remain unchanged.

Tools for Sandblasting

Before sandblasting, ensure you have some tools. They include:

• gummed paper (the size of paper should be big enough to cover the whole tombstone )

• abrasive materials

• sandblasting machine (current sandblasting machine has typography function )

• burin

Operating Way of Sandblasting

Now, let’s start to make a sandblasting tombstone.

Step1. Prepare a gummed paper, then use a sandblasting machine to do typography on the form. The typography must be correct, otherwise,

it is a tricky and lengthy process to remodify a finished sandblasting headstone.

Step2. Cover the tombstone with the gummed paper. Making sure the monument is clean before glueing paper.

Step3. There will be some characters on the gummed paper after typography, using burin to carve symbols.

Step4. Sandblasting the engraved letters with abrasive material. The time of sandblasting is longer; the colour of the notes will be darker.

After the step completed, disclosing the gummed paper, a sandblasting headstone has been finished.

The traditional sandblasting technique is commonly used in processing words. With the continuous development of technology, sandblasting is now applied in more fields.
